The biggest mistake people make when writing SEO friendly content is that they try and write copy for search engines. Your first thought must be to write content for real people and not search engines even if the copy is intended boost your search engine rankings.
There are many ways to write good SEO friendly content that can be used by both real people and search engines to find out what the page they are viewing is about. I have listed just three that you might find useful.
-
Writing relevant content about the page is very important. If you write about something completely different to what the page is trying to say or advertise then you can be penalised in a number of ways, the most serious being the page getting blacklisted from the search engine result pages (SERPs).
- When you are writing your content think about where you want to link to from this page and imbed keyword rich text links into your content, thus making your links more relevant to the page you are linking through to. E.g. If you are advertising a games console on your landing page and you link through to the product page, make sure you link to the item using the brand and product name instead of something irrelevant like “Click here” and “Shop now”.
- 5 – 10% of your overall content should consist of targeted keywords. If the user can see what keywords or phrases your page is targeting without opening up the source code then you have used the keyword or phrase too much. If you want to emphasis your keywords or phrases occasionally you can use the < strong > < h >, or < em > tags to make them more defined to the user.
There are also alternative places that you can add keywords to your page that are not seen by humans unless they want to. This is not black hat SEO as anybody are able to see the keywords if they would like to by looking through the page source code.
-
Tags such as the image ALT tag and link TITLE tags are an ideal place to add extra keywords to help with the keywords already added to the copy.
- Adding keywords to the file name, folder names and image files used within the page are other good places to add any valuable keywords helping to increase the relevancy.
This is just an overview for writing SEO friendly content and there are many other ways in which you can do this. Please feel free to let us know what you would do to write SEO friendly content and if you agree or disagree with my overview.
